Challenge

Professionals and students often encounter non-searchable PDF documents. This can affect those who need to quickly retrieve information from digital documents but lack the necessary tools or knowledge to modify these files effectively.

Solution

Create a brief online guide using a series of narrated screen-recorded instructions about how to identify non-searchable text, explain OCR (optical character recognition), demonstrate how to apply an OCR conversion to a PDF file, and how to verify the conversion.

  • Focus on progressive skill development by starting with foundational knowledge.
  • Use a common case scenario: non-searchable text occurs after exporting a Word document to PDF>.
  • Include an OCR conversion tool without financial or techincal barriers.

My Role

  • Provide a practical guide that accommodates varying technical literacy levels.

  • Define learning objectives using measurable and observable activities.

  • Determine an appropriate delivery method based on the target audience needs.

  • Develop narration, screen-recording, editing, and while following accessibility guidelines.

Impact

  • Learners will be able to apply an OCR conversion to PDF documents with non-searchable text by using the resource referenced in the step-by-step demonstration.

  • Learners will be able to verify the OCR conversion by searching for text and using the mouse to select text.

Reflection

Especially considering my past frustrations with poorly scanned texts, I've really seen the importance of accessible educational materials. This project has strengthened my resolve to push for better resources in learning environments and making sure one's ability to learn is not compromised by subpar materials. Working on this guide was not just about solving a technical issue—it was also about championing the need for educational environments that support satisfying learning experiences.
